Whole Body DEXA

Low-dose DEXA scanning for bone mineral density and body composition — quick, painless and precise.

About this study

DEXA is the gold-standard test for bone mineral density: it detects thinning bone long before a fracture happens, when treatment is most effective.

The same scan can also map your body composition — how much lean muscle, fat and bone you carry, region by region — with a precision bathroom scales and BMI can't approach.

Who should consider it

  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Fracture risk assessment
  • Body composition analysis
  • Post-menopausal women and men over 65
  • Anyone with a fragility fracture or height loss
  • Long-term steroid, thyroid or anti-seizure medication users
  • Athletes and fitness enthusiasts tracking lean mass and body fat

What to expect on the day

  1. Check in

No gowns needed for most patients — just wear clothing without zips, buckles or metal buttons.

  2. The scan

You lie comfortably on an open, padded table while a scanning arm passes above you. Nothing encloses you and nothing touches you.

  3. Stay still, briefly

Each region takes only a couple of minutes. The whole appointment is usually done inside 15 minutes.

  4. Your results

Your report includes bone density T-scores your doctor can act on, and — for body composition studies — a regional breakdown of fat and lean mass.

How to prepare

  • Skip calcium supplements on the morning of your scan — they can artificially inflate readings.
  • Wear comfortable clothing free of metal; you can usually stay fully dressed.
  • Tell us if you've had a barium study or contrast scan in the past week — we may reschedule for accuracy.
  • Bring previous DEXA reports so we can trend your bone density over time.
