Colour Doppler

Ultrasound with colour Doppler for blood flow, vessels, pregnancy and abdominal studies — real-time and radiation-free.

About this study

Ultrasound is imaging at the speed of life — real-time pictures with zero radiation, which is why it's the first-line study in pregnancy and the go-to for organs that move.

Adding colour Doppler overlays the direction and speed of blood flow onto the image, turning the same probe into a tool for finding blocked veins, narrowed arteries and abnormal circulation.

What we commonly scan

  • Carotid & venous Doppler
  • Obstetric & abdominal scans
  • Small parts & thyroid
  • Leg vein studies for DVT and varicose veins
  • Carotid arteries for stroke risk assessment
  • Pregnancy scans with fetal blood-flow assessment
  • Scrotal, breast and soft-tissue lumps

What to expect on the day

  1. Getting ready

You lie on the examination couch and the sonologist applies a warm gel to the skin over the area being scanned.

  2. The scan

A smooth hand-held probe glides over the skin. Colour Doppler lights up blood flow in real time — you may even hear your own pulse through the machine.

  3. Live answers

Because ultrasound is real time, the doctor can examine exactly where it hurts, watch organs move, and often discuss initial findings with you on the spot.

  4. Afterwards

The gel wipes straight off and there's nothing to recover from.

How to prepare

  • Abdominal scans: fast for around 6 hours so the gallbladder and pancreas can be seen clearly.
  • Pelvic and pregnancy scans: arrive with a comfortably full bladder unless told otherwise.
  • Venous Doppler, thyroid and small parts: no preparation at all.
  • Wear loose clothing that gives easy access to the area being examined.
