Where MRI and CT show what your organs look like, nuclear medicine shows how they work. A tiny amount of radioactive tracer travels to the organ being studied, and the gamma camera maps its function in real time.
That functional view is often the earliest window on disease — a bone scan can show changes months before an X-ray does, and a renal study measures each kidney's contribution individually.

What to expect on the day
- Tracer administration
A small, safe dose of tracer is given — usually as an injection, occasionally as a capsule or drink depending on the study.
- Uptake period
Depending on the study, you may wait minutes to a few hours while the tracer reaches the target organ. You can relax in our post-dose bays.
- Gamma camera imaging
You lie still while the camera detects the tracer's signal. The camera moves close to you but never touches you, and the imaging itself is silent and painless.
- Afterwards
Drink water to help clear the tracer. Most people go straight back to their day.
How to prepare
- Arrive on time — tracer doses are prepared for your slot.
- Tell us about all medicines you take; some thyroid and cardiac studies need specific medicines paused.
- Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before your appointment.
